Hello all this is all of you who I have a guide dog. I have a question do you think it was wrong of me to ask if I do the home interview at my college iset of doing it at home? I do live at home with my parents and I don't work around in my town must I do more at school. please tell me what you all think and how you felt with your interview. thanks Erica.n
They want to see how you do in your neighborhood, hence the term "home" interview. You can let them know during the home interview that you do more work around your college campus, though, but do have some kind of a route prepared in your home area so they can see that you know your neighborhood wel.
It depends on the school. While most do want to be comfortable with knowing that you do know your neighborhood, many of them are okay with including another place/area where you do more work. They may ask that you do a route for both places, so be prepared to know something, even if it's just something small, about your neighborhood.
Some schools are really thorough. When I got my dog I had to fill out all kinds of medical forms from several doctors and then the home interview. My school wanted to see where I lived, traffic situations, if I knew any places around my area, any other people or animals that would be interacting with my dog, ect. Also, we did some work at my college too.
I'd have something in mind for your neighborhood, even if it's just to the local gas station to buy a pop or something. Know the traffic patterns in your area and then also let them know about your area where you are the most and they will probably want to see you work there as well to be sure everything is safe for the dog and you.
Kia was a yellow lab from Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafel California and their training process is thorough and some schools will even do a home visit after you have your dog. This is to check on its health, working ability, commands up-to-date and things like that.
Good luck.

Oh, one possible thing you might want to consider after you get your dog; I don't suggest taking the dog to the fair or the movie theater as there's way too much food around on the ground or floor and I don't care how well trained the dog is, that's just too much temptation. Besides, I took mine to the theater once and then had to give her a bath because the floor was all sticky from spilt sodda and candy.
What guide dog school did you apply to?
Yeah pretty much what everyone has already said...
Hmm I've taken my guide dog to the movies several times and I didn't have any problems. Hate the sticky floor though... grose.
hello all I am going with guidingeyes in ny. they call to do the home interview but all my paper work I am working on and om teacher hasn't got his paper yet so I thought it was to soon to do the home interview. thanks Erica.
Yay I went to Guiding Eyes too.
I got Whitney from the guide dog foundation, and they did my interview at college since I live on campus and that's where I spend most of my time. I have taken my dog to the movies myself, and yeah she wanted the popcorn on the floor, but for me, wanting and getting are 2 totally different things. I think it depends on the dog though and the stress it brings on the owner. I say try it first, and make a decision. Also, maybe bring an old bath towel to the movies, or a smaller rug or something.
